What role should producers play in accelerating the transition to a truly circular model in the electronics sector?
At LG, we believe producers must take active responsibility from the outset: designing products that are more durable, easier to repair and easier to recycle. Circularity begins with design, and at LG we already work with more sustainable materials and solutions that extend the life of our devices.
Producers also have the ability to lead new consumption models – offering refurbishment services, take-back programmes for old devices and shared-economy initiatives. At the same time, building partnerships with other industry stakeholders and supporting awareness campaigns helps scale practical solutions and move towards a more responsible, resource-efficient model.
What barriers hinder consumer involvement in WEEE recycling and how can they be overcome?
Many consumers still do not know what to do with their old devices or find the recycling process neither easy nor worthwhile. Added to this is some lingering distrust about the final destination of products and a lack of clear incentives to return them responsibly.
As a sector, we must work to make recycling more accessible, more visible, and more widely valued. At LG, we actively support in-store collection programmes and collaborate with organisations such as ECOTIC to make it easier for consumers to recycle televisions, monitors, and other electronic equipment. We also believe it is essential to communicate the positive and tangible impact of these actions connecting with values such as protecting the planet and conserving natural resources.
What sets ECOTIC apart as an Extended Producer Responsibility Collective System (EPRCS) in an increasingly demanding sustainability and regulatory landscape after 20 years?
At LG, we particularly value ECOTIC’s proven extensive experience and hands-on approach, as well as its outstanding ability to adapt to new regulatory challenges. Its in-depth knowledge of the electronics sector and collaborative mindset enable us to meet our obligations efficiently, anticipating changes and optimising logistics and traceability.
Moreover, ECOTIC offers more than compliance. It drives educational projects, awareness campaigns and technological platforms that reinforce the environmental commitment of brands such as LG. In a constantly evolving landscape, having an EPRCS like ECOTIC is essential for moving forward with rigour and consistency towards a more circular economy.
